Centro de Epidemiología Pediátrica de la División de Bioinformática y Bioestadística de la USF: Mejora de la salud infantil a través de la investigación
USF Health es una asociación única entre la Facultad de Medicina, la Facultad de Enfermería y la Facultad de Salud Pública de la Universidad del Sur de Florida. Esta asociación se dedica a mejorar la salud en todos los aspectos, desde los factores ambientales hasta la salud individual. Un aspecto importante de esta misión es la investigación, que es donde entra en juego el Centro de Epidemiología Pediátrica de la División de Bioinformática y Bioestadística de la USF.
El Centro de Epidemiología Pediátrica (PEc) de la División de Bioinformática y Bioestadística de la USF se estableció en 2005 con el objetivo de mejorar la salud infantil a través de la investigación. La misión del centro es realizar investigaciones epidemiológicas de alta calidad que conduzcan a mejores estrategias de prevención, tratamientos y resultados para los niños.
El PEc cuenta con un equipo de investigadores experimentados y expertos en sus respectivos campos. Trabajan en colaboración en varios proyectos relacionados con epidemiología pediátrica, bioestadística, bioinformática, genética/genómica, metodología/gestión/análisis/informes de ensayos clínicos, así como gestión/análisis/informes de datos.
Un área en la que PEc ha hecho contribuciones significativas es la investigación del trastorno del espectro autista (TEA). El centro ha estado involucrado en varios estudios a gran escala destinados a identificar los factores de riesgo de TEA y desarrollar intervenciones efectivas para los niños afectados. Por ejemplo, un estudio realizado por PEc encontró que la exposición materna a la contaminación del aire durante el embarazo puede aumentar el riesgo de ASD en la descendencia.
Otra área en la que PEc ha realizado contribuciones significativas es la investigación de la obesidad infantil. El centro ha participado en varios estudios destinados a identificar los factores de riesgo de la obesidad infantil y desarrollar intervenciones eficaces para los niños afectados. Por ejemplo, un estudio realizado por PEc encontró que la exposición temprana a los antibióticos puede aumentar el riesgo de obesidad infantil.
Además de realizar sus propios proyectos de investigación, PEc también colabora con otras instituciones en varios proyectos de epidemiología pediátrica, como ensayos clínicos multicéntricos o estudios observacionales financiados por subvenciones de NIH o CDC.
PEc también brinda oportunidades de capacitación para los estudiantes interesados en seguir carreras relacionadas con la epidemiología pediátrica o la bioestadística/bioinformática a través de pasantías o programas de becas ofrecidos por las facultades de salud de la USF o fuentes de financiación externas, como las becas de capacitación NIH T32.
En general, el Centro de Epidemiología Pediátrica de la División de Bioinformática y Bioestadística de la USF desempeña un papel importante no solo dentro de USF Health, sino también a nivel nacional/internacional con respecto al avance del conocimiento sobre problemas de salud infantil a través de una investigación científica rigurosa que utiliza métodos/herramientas/enfoques de última generación mientras brindando oportunidades de capacitación para los científicos de las generaciones futuras que continuarán este trabajo fundamental para comprender mejor cómo podemos mejorar los resultados de salud infantil a nivel mundial y reducir las disparidades entre las diferentes poblaciones/grupos según la raza/etnicidad/género/estado socioeconómico/etc.
