He estado involucrado con Open Arms Housing desde sus inicios. Ayudé a recaudar dinero para comprar el edificio, renovarlo y luego amueblarlo. Estoy orgulloso de haber sido parte del primer proyecto "Housing First" en Washington DC. Mucha gente se rindió antes de que termináramos el edificio, diciendo que nunca podríamos conseguir viviendas con apoyo permanente en la ciudad. Contratamos a la mejor Directora Ejecutiva de todos los tiempos y, con su talento, Open Arms ahora atiende a 40 mujeres que sufren de enfermedades mentales y se ha expandido de un edificio a sitios dispersos por la ciudad.

Esta es una organización sin fines de lucro que se creó para alojar viviendas para personas que han tenido crisis por falta de hogar, adicciones, abuso, encarcelamiento, discapacidad funcional y se centra en los servicios de salud para mujeres (especialmente mujeres mayores). Hay varios edificios que son de ocupación singular. La mayoría son apartamentos tipo estudio y algunas unidades de un dormitorio en Washington DC. Los residentes se llevan mejor sin las intervenciones del personal del programa, que ha sido descrito como interrumpido, incompetente, mezquino, excesivamente controlador y generalmente molesto. Si bien puede haber grandes contribuciones de fuentes externas para las mejoras en el estilo de vida de los residentes, la gran mayoría nunca las recibe ni las conoce. Sin embargo, se invita a algunos residentes seleccionados a mano para que los vean en eventos de recaudación de fondos si se pueden manejar. En general, Open Arms Housing es una gran idea que se necesita pero con más políticas hacia el empoderamiento a través de la retroalimentación de los participantes y el consejo de todos los residentes (sin la presión del personal de la OAH para alcanzar las metas). ¡Se podría lograr mucho más con este proyecto si los intereses de la base de clientes residentes se vuelven más inclusivos con los proveedores que son inusualmente evasivos cuando es el momento de precisar hechos relacionados con $$$$ o tiempo! Pero por el lado positivo: hay un gran mural nuevo pintado por LisaTalhamer en el costado del edificio OAH en 52 o St. NW, que es una declaración de empoderamiento de las mujeres bastante atrevida.
