Este lugar es una agencia estatal financiada por los contribuyentes que debería reflejar la filosofía del llamado estado secular, pero para sus representantes que aparentemente pasan todo el día siendo improductivos, la única oleada de poder que obtienen es humillando y avergonzando a las mujeres. Recientemente, tuve motivos para visitar dos veces en un período corto de tiempo.
La primera vez para solicitar un documento que debería haber tomado unos minutos y solo implica ver al guardia y tal vez a un empleado en la sala de espera. Aunque el edificio no tiene un código de vestimenta, me dijeron que tenía que cubrirme los brazos porque llevaba una blusa sin mangas y me bajaba la falda que estaba justo por encima de las rodillas. Todo el mundo sabe que Guyana es un país tropical, unos pocos grados por encima del ecuador, con un clima sofocante y húmedo durante todo el año y en la mayoría de los lugares, incluido el gobierno. Las agencias ni siquiera tienen AC y el estado es supuestamente secular, pero en el terreno la realidad es muy diferente y vigilar los cuerpos de las mujeres es la norma.
En la segunda ocasión volví a recoger el documento que debió haber demorado menos de un minuto y nuevamente el guardia de seguridad me dijo que me cubriera los brazos con 'ropa de invierno' aunque no pudo mostrarme un código de vestimenta. Estos lugares no solo funcionan como instituciones religiosas, sino que también practican una discriminación flagrante. Después de cubrirme los hombros, me permitieron entrar a la sala de espera donde vi a una mujer con 'tirantes finos' en su blusa que dejaban al descubierto más piel, esperando el servicio y el guardia no le dijo nada. Muchas instituciones públicas son elefantes derrochadores e improductivos donde hay una falta de visión e innovación y lo único productivo que se logra cada día es la vigilancia de los cuerpos de las mujeres.
