Ella fue golpeada en el estómago y abusada verbalmente por otros niños porque en ese entonces era una zona bastante rural. Lo hubo, y posiblemente todavía lo haya. un sentimiento muy anti-haoli (continental, recién llegado, blanco) entre muchos "locales". Esto fue cierto a pesar de que vivió allí desde los 5 hasta los 18 años y su hermana menor nació y se crió allí. No me malinterpretes, por favor. Crecí en Nueva York, ahora vivo en Nuevo México y amo mucho a Hawai, y tengo amor, respeto y conocimiento de las muchas culturas que coexisten y prosperan allí. Mi única objeción es la actitud de los administradores de muchas de las escuelas locales, que no solo toleraron, sino que promovieron y alentaron ese fanatismo. Kahakai es la escuela primaria pública al sur de Kailua-Kona. Todos mis hijos que han asistido a la escuela han disfrutado de la experiencia y su educación ha progresado bien: los maestros son maravillosos con los niños y ha sido un placer tratar con ellos como padres.

Hay un punto relacionado con las escuelas públicas de Hawái que me gustaría abordar: antes de mudarnos a Hawái, escuchamos mucha evidencia anecdótica de que los niños blancos del continente fueron seleccionados y acosados ​​en las escuelas públicas, pero me complace informar que mis hijos no han tenido ese problema aquí. Basado en la experiencia de nuestra familia, recomendaría esta escuela a otros padres sin ninguna reserva.
